HELP HEAL HAITI 2.0

Joyner teachers visited Haiti this summer and have committed to helping one specific orphanage. This new orphanage has close to 70 children, but no bedding or mattresses. In addition, there are no buildings to house these children, and they have extremely limited supplies. We would like the Joyner family to partner with these children and 1st grade to provide first aid kits.

The items needed are:
  • sterile gauze pads of different sizes
  • Band-Aids in several sizes
  • elastic bandages
  • splints
  • antiseptic wipes
  • antibiotic ointment
  • hydrogen peroxide
  • hydrocortisone cream (1%)
  • acetaminophen or ibuprofen
  • tweezers
  • sharp scissors
  • safety pins
  • disposable instant cold packs
  • calamine lotion
  • alcohol wipes or ethyl alcohol
  • thermometer with covers
  • plastic non-latex gloves
  • flashlight & extra batteries
  • blankets
  • mouthpiece for administering CPR

"If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody."
- Chinese Proverb

We will be collecting items through the end of November.

 Dear First Grade Families,

As part of our IB Unit, Won’t You Be My Neighbor, we will be learning about our community and what we can do to make it better.

On Saturday, October 29th, there will be a walk to raise money for Juvenile Diabetes. First grade is taking action to help our community with this organization. Each first grade teacher will be a captain, and we will have a friendly competition to see which class can raise the most money for this important cause. The winning class will receive a party from Ms. Herman!

There are many ways you, as families, can contribute. We would love for you to join us in walking together on the 29th at the Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion at Walnut Creek. Check-in time is 9:00 and the walk begins at 10:30 (rain or shine – look for the Joyner sign!). If you are able to join in the walk, please register online by following the directions below.

If you are not able to walk and would like to make a contribution, any donations would be greatly appreciated. You may register/donate by following these directions:

·         Go to walk.jdrf.org
·         Find donate to a walker
·         Fill in your teacher’s first and last name (First Name: team Last Name: W)
·         Team Name: Joyner 1st Grade
·         Once on that page, click on your teacher’s name to take you to the site
·         Click on Donate to This Walker AND/OR Join This Team
·         Here you can see how close we are to coming to reaching our goal!

As an alternative way of donating, you may also send a check in to school with your child made out to JDRF. We will be collecting money through the month of October.

Lastly, if this is an organization very close to your heart, you may become captain and reach your own goal of $100.

Thank you in advance for helping children in the community who battle with this disease each day. Together, we can help raise money for research to hopefully find a cure one day.

All the best,

First Grade Team

FRIENDLY REMINDER:  You must register with WCPSS and be approved before you are allowed to volunteer for centers.

The students are doing so well in Reader's Workshop and Writer's Workshop. They are all doing a really great job taking the information from mini lessons and applying it to their own work. We are so proud of the class!
